The Process of Adopting

Thank you for your interest in adopting from the Bitty Kitty Brigade! We seek responsible individuals (21+) in the Twin Cities metro area committed to providing our animals with the 20+ years of care they deserve. We’d love to connect you with your next furry friend! Please read over our process and requirements prior to applying.

  • Kittens must be adopted in pairs, unless another young companion animal is currently in the home.
  • Everyone in the family must visit the animals prior to adoption. We do not allow surprises or gifts of our animals.
  • If you’re pursuing adoption through other rescues, please complete that process first and ensure that your new friend is up to date on vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery.
  • You must be ready to pick up your pet within 7 days of the adoption being finalized. We cannot hold animals for vacations, holidays or other reasons.

Adopting an animal is a significant commitment. Please ensure you’re ready for this responsibility and any costs that may arise. Timing is also important – you need to be able to pick up the pet within 7 days of the adoption being finalized and should not have any extended absences from home scheduled within a month of adoption.

As a foster-based rescue, our animals are located across various homes in the Twin Cities metro area. We do not have a shelter facility where you can come visit. Visit our Available Kittens or Available Puppy page to select your future companion. Submitting an application doesn’t guarantee the pet is on hold for you, as it may find a home while we process your application. Rest assured, if that happens, our adoption team will work to match you with another animal.

After applying, please allow our Adoption Coordinators at least 3 days to process your application. Remember to check your junk and spam folders for any status updates.

By applying, you acknowledge that we reserve the right to accept or deny your application at any point.

We prioritize our animals’ well-being. During this phase, we thoroughly assess all applications to ensure your resident  pets are receiving  proper medical care, including annual preventative measures. All animals in the home must be up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered. For cats, this includes FVRCP and rabies vaccinations. For dogs, this includes DHLPP (distemper) and rabies vaccinations.

If you rent or live in a non-owned property, we may contact you to confirm your ability to have animals. Be prepared to provide written approval from your property manager or owner.

After verifying your application details, our Adoption Coordinator will arrange a relaxed and casual phone interview. No need to be nervous! This conversation helps us get to know you better as an adopter, explain our process in detail, and provide information about the specific pet you’re interested in. This is a great chance to answer any questions you may have as well.

Applications considered a good match for a specific animal are required to have in-person interactions with our animals before finalizing the adoption. We encourage adopters to visit as soon as possible. However, the animal will be placed on ‘hold’ for 7 days after the initial phone interview. The complete household, including partners, spouses, and children, must be present. This allows our fosters to meet with you, ensuring a suitable match between you and the animal of interest. These visits take place in the foster’s home. After the visit, you have two more additional days of that animal being on ‘hold’ just for you.

Additionally, applicants may undergo a virtual home visit to ensure the safety of our animals and confirm that the new home is puppy and kitten proof.

Once everyone (including yourself) confirms that it’s a match, we’ll send the ‘Match Email’ containing all the instructions for pick up. If this isn’t a pre-adoption, we ask that you be ready to take home your new pet within 7 days (this may be longer if the kitten you are adopting is currently under 10 weeks).

A day before pick up, you’ll receive the adoption contract and the payment link to submit the adoption fee. This fee contributes to supporting our ongoing rescue efforts. On the pickup day, we request that you have a safe way to transport the animal, including carriers specifically intended for kittens/cats and appropriate travel restraints for puppies and dogs.

Our cats receive comprehensive veterinary care. All cats/kittens are:

  • Spayed/neutered
  • Treated for external and internal parasites
  • Microchipped
  • Tested for Feline Leukemia
  • Up to date on vaccines for FVRCP (distemper) and Feline Leukemia*
  • Rabies vaccinated during spay/neuter
  • Provided medical care for all known issues

* Boosters at 12 and 16 weeks are required to complete the series. Any vaccines needed after adoption are the responsibility of the adopter.

We charge an adoption fee of $250/kitten and $200/adult to help cover these costs, payable by cash or credit card. Your support is greatly appreciated!
